The building at 518 N. Water St. has been the home to a number of bars including Six Degrees and Cadence Bar and Lounge. Under the management of Brian Babler, Fire on Water opens to bring together music, lively happy hours and downtown vivacity.

Just as we thought the recession was starting to get the best of us, we're starting to see signs of life as new shops, restaurants and bars pop up all over town.

We recently chatted with Fire on Water owner Brian Babler about his new bar, changes to the space and life on Water Street.

OnMilwaukee.com: Are you changing the theme of the space?

Brian Babler: The theme of Fire is music.  The interior will be music themed and the "soundtrack" to the bar will be from the greatest musicians and bands from the '60's through today.  From the Red Hot Chili Peppers to The Clash to The Beatles to the Beastie Boys.

OMC: Have you chosen to remodel or transform the space?

BB: As far as remodeling goes, our main focus is getting our rooftop patio open for outside seating, along with the kitchen.  We plan to be serving food eventually. Other than that, we are giving the place a face lift with a whole new feel.

OMC: What made you choose a Water Street location?

BB: Water Street is still one of the hottest spots in Milwaukee.  We liked this particular section of Water because we can get a diverse group of customers here.  Anyone from the local business professional looking for a drink after work to the young party crowd looking for live music on a Saturday night.  Our location is right between the heart of Water Street and the 3rd Ward, and we're right off the highway.

OMC: When can we expect to stop in for a visit?

BB: We hope to be open by the middle of October.
