When somebody mentions "Pandl's in Bayside," two words leap into my head:

Sunday brunch.

When I was in college, living on Ramen noodles and beer nuts, the folks would occasionally invite me to brunch at Pandl's and I would try to eat a month's worth of food. I figured that making 10 trips to the buffet while carrying heaping plates was my aerobic activity AND weight workout for the day.

My mother will be visiting from Arizona soon and I was thinking of taking her to Pandl's for old time's sake. A couple of days later, I heard that George Pandl died.

The founder of Pandl's in Bayside, George Pandl was 82 and had suffered from prostate cancer. The Pandl family, which has been running restaurants in Whitefish Bay and around Milwaukee since the early 1900s, has provided a lot of memories for thousands of diners over the years.

They have my deepest sympathies.
