"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun bars and club articles -- including guides, unique features, drink recipes and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!

I'd never heard of Col. Joe Rickey until a blurb popped up about him in Esquire as the father of the Gin Rickey (and a family of other lime-tinged cocktails). Apparently, the colonel took a bourbon and soda and squeezed in half a lime. Somewhere down the line, someone discovered that the combination was even better with gin.

The Gin Rickey is a very cool and refreshing drink with a bit more panache than the classic Tanqueray and tonic. (Easier to make, too than the mojito, which comes from the same cocktail tree.) I just might have to mix a couple this summer when one of my favorite baseball players, Rickey Henderson, makes his way into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Best of all, it's a simple recipe:

Fill a tall glass with ice
Squeeze in the juice of ½ lime and drop the rind in the glass
Add 1 ½ oz. of your favorite gin
Top with chilled club soda or seltzer
Stir and enjoy
