It's time for Dining Month, presented by Deer District and its spooky Halloween-themed alter ego, Fear District. Throughout the month of October, we'll be serving up fun and fascinating content about all things food. The signature dish, however, is our 2019 Best of Dining poll, who's winners we will dish out all month long. Get hungry, Milwaukee!

The Glass Pantry, a small cafe and specialty grocery shop, is on track to open by the end of 2019 at 1039 S. 5th St. in Walker's Point.

"We are a refill station, meaning you can fill a container of your choosing and purchase as little as much as you need of a product," says owner Jenna Meier.

"We will also offer items that help people live a lower-waste lifestyle, such as reusable containers and jars, coffee cups, water bottles, straws, cutlery, paper towels and bags."

The cafe and specialty grocery shop will specialize in organic products, bulk foods including dry goods and liquid items, household goods and cleaners, and body products. Food items will include beans, nuts, grains, chocolates, coffee, tea, spices, dried fruits, rices, snack items, oils, vinegars, and baking items. Body soaps, dish soaps, detergents and all-purpose cleaners will all be available.

"I have been trying to reduce waste in our home for the past few years and I found that purchasing in bulk was a great way to do so. But it's not been easy, I shop at three different stores per week and I still can't find everything I need to be package free," says Meier.

Meier lives in Bay View with her husband and 1-year-old son. She says opening the store is a longtime dream that became especially important after she became a mom.

"My son really inspired me to take this big step. I want to set an example of taking responsibility for our actions and show him the power of individual choices when it comes to making change," says Meier.

"All of the small choices matter and we have so much opportunity to do better, support each other, and create a better world for ourselves and our kids."
