I made it through three seasons of "Mad Men" – and I really enjoyed them and their unique lens into the early advertising world. But after a while, it got to be a bit much for me. The drama moved away from the agency to lead character Don Draper, and it lost me.

"Good Girls Revolt" is similar to "Mad Men," but instead of an ad agency setting, its home is a magazine and newsroom in 1969. And it's completely hooked me.

Created by Dana Calvo and based on a nonfiction book by Lynn Povich, "Good Girls Revolt" is a great look into the drama of a news organization at a time when attitudes, gender roles and mindsets were changing – and in need of change.

There’s tension everywhere in this series that, at its core, follows a group of young female researchers at a magazine called "News of the Week" – all based, of course, on the historic case that started at "Newsweek."

Starring Genevieve Angelson, Anna Camp (of "Pitch Perfect"), Erin Darke, Chris Diamantopoulos, Hunter Parrish, Jim Belushi, Joy Bryant and Grace Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter), there’s great acting and drama in every episode. Boss versus leader. Man versus woman. Husband versus wife. Reporter versus editor. Design versus copy. Hard news versus entertainment news. Rich versus poor. Corporate versus creative.

It can be heady stuff, but the show is done in a fun manner that’s easy and entertaining to watch. And the acting is tight, subtly but clearly positioning the massive challenges, huge disappointments and courageous rebellions.

TriStar Television co-produced "Good Girls Revolt" with Amazon, who has already said it won’t do a second season. Still, I’m six episodes into the ten-episode season, and several people have told me that it ends tightly and may not even warrant a second season. That’s totally fine, because this season is great, and I highly suggest you add it to your watch list.
