Gourmet magazine’s annual list of the “Top 50” restaurants in America is out, and Milwaukee’s own Sanford proudly stands as the only area restaurant on the list. Sanford Restaurant, 1547 Jackson St., is owned and operated by chef Sandy D’Amato and his wife.

Madison’s L'Etoile was the only other Wisconsin restaurant on the list, as it came in at #48.  Chicago’s Alinea came in at  #1. More than half of the restaurants on this year’s list are making their debut on the “Top 50.”

“America's Top 50 Restaurants” is in the October Gourmet.  The list comes out every five years, and is spearheaded by editor-in-chief Ruth Reichl, along with several of the magazine's food critics, who eat at and rate restaurants across the country.
