A couple of years ago, Greg Marshall, a three-time Emmy Award winning storyteller and producer, asked himself what he would do if he could do anything in the world.
“I thought about all the things I've learned performing music, speaking, diving into the creative business world, in marriage, parenting, all of life, and I had a realization that the most valuable and joyful thing I can do is this: tell stories that awaken imagination, inspire and make people feel good,” says Marshall.
Thus, Marshall create a one-man show called “Greg Marshall Pops Out of the Trees.” The true and personal performance is a blend of storytelling, music and freestyling. It details a young man who learns that the best story isn't his own, rather the ones he hears from the most unexpected people.
The show runs Monday, Nov. 18 at Vivarium, 1818 N. Farwell Ave. It starts at 8 p.m. (Doors are at 7 p.m.) Tickets are $20 and available here.
According to Marshall, after watching the show, the audience will glean a new self perspective. “I want people to leave feeling refreshed, inspired and more in touch with themselves,” he says.
“Greg Marshall Pops Out of the Trees” also includes a lot of humor. Comedian Mike Birbiglia is one of Marshall’s inspirations.
“This isn't a standup comedy show, but I've been inspired by many incredible storytellers who mix laughter with deep emotion,” he says.
Originally, Marshall was a hip hop artist who performed at open mics and MC Battles as a teenager. He later former a hip hip group that created music for all ages, The Figureheads. He later received three Emmys.
Marshall hopes to inspire others through his performance, but has also received great personal satisfaction from the project.
“When I'm performing this show, I feel like I'm in the center of what I'm alive to do. The process of crafting the story, sharing it, sharpening it with friends and family – I love it,” says Marshall. “I can't wait to share it.”
