Idling at stoplights with a sinister grumble, the handler concentrates on turning the red light green. Tearing up interstates with a massive roar, riders are full of the same confidence that pushes troops into battle.

They are Harley Davidson motorcycles, a fixture of Milwaukee and proud of an unusual mixture of sophisticated rebellion. With a history that encountered the round-fendered '40s, the chromed '50s, the muscular '60s, the '70s fuel shortage and the lackluster '80s, Harley has remained a staple of American transportation for 100 years. Proud of their accomplishments and history, Harley-Davidson's Capitol Drive plant in Wauwatosa is the only H-D facility open to the public for inspection and discovery of the Harley tradition.

The free tour offers participants the opportunity to witness firsthand the makings of the power behind the XL engines of both Harley-Davidson and their extension, Buell, also a prestigious name in performance bikes. Accompanied by history-tracing videos, the tour allows for even non-gearheads to understand the draw and awe of a Harley motorcycle.

The museum lobby of the Capitol Drive plant displays variants of Harley style and machinery history and is the only place indoors that allows photography. Hosted by company retirees, the plant tour ensures an informational and respectful experience. Usually lasting approximately one hour, the tour is supplemented by informative video clips describing the work being done and the personal experience of the guide offers glimpses into Harley life that has since passed.

The tour covers all aspects of engine production, from gear making to the creation of a power-train. The progression of raw pieces to finished engines is also on display, putting into perspective the development from parts to whole.

The image of Harley riders has grown to include all, from that of the tough and raw to the fun-loving hobbyists. While Milwaukee has become "famous" for unfortunate events such as sausage-wacking, Harley-Davidson rises above as a well-known name.
