The Jazz Estate, an iconic East Side jazz lounge, 2423 N. Murray Ave., is no longer for sale even though it had been on the market since early last fall.

Instead, co-owner Brian Sanders will retire from the business and longtime staff member Matt Turner, along with Jamie Fraters, will take the reigns.

Turner is a Milwaukee musician known for his work with Static Chicken, Sam Llanas, De La Buena and MotherDog. Fraters is a 13-year service industry veteran.

"Jamie and I are excited to continue the tradition," says Turner. "The Estate started over 30 years ago. Great, diverse music has always been a part of The Estate, and we plan to build on tradition with an expanded focus on all genres of music."

A weekend celebration on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22 is planned in honor of Sanders’ 14 years of dedication to the business.

Called the "Brian Sanders ‘Pull The Trigger’ Gala," the event will feature the music of the Aaron Gardner Quintet and Choir Fight both nights.

The music begins at 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with doors opening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door the night of the shows. You must be at least 21 to attend.

Turner and Fraters plan to offer more regional and national acts in the future while staying committed to local bands.

Eddie Gomez will play on Friday, April 4, The Greyhounds on Saturday, April 5 and Charlie Hunter on Friday, April 11.

"And we're just getting started," says Turner.

The chance to retain such an intimate and classic music venue is great news for Milwaukee.
