Summerfest may have just ended, but there is happy festival-related news to report. This morning, the LGBT Film/Video Festival officially announced its return, along with the dates – as well as a few early selections – for this upcoming year's event.
For the last four years, the long-running Milwaukee film event gathered its selections together and compacted them into one long weekend. This year, however, the LGBT Film/Video Festival is returning to its past format, spreading the films across 11 days, Oct. 16-26, in the university's Union Theatre.
"It was a good experiment, with lots of successes, but many of our patrons will appreciate the greater temporal elbow room to experience even more film-going options," said festival director and UWM film instructor Carl Bogner.
The LGBT Film/Video Festival already has several selections lined up for this year – its 29th year of existence. Among the choices are "Salvation Army," a coming-of-age drama from Moroccan author/filmmaker Abdellah Taia; Sophie Hyde's "52 Tuesdays," a drama about a teenage girl's adjustment to her mother's gender transition that won a directing award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival; "Out in the Night," a documentary about The New Jersey 4, a group of young African American lesbians charged with gang assault after defending themselves from an assailant; and Madeleine Olnek's absurdist comedy "The Foxy Merkins."
The rest of the lineup will be released in early September on the festival's website and Facebook page.
