Welcome once again to another installment of the OnMilwauke.com / WMSE Local Music Podcast where promotions director Brent Gohde and I take on the pleasurable task of presenting to you, the loyal reader and listener, a sampling of the ever-changing musical landscape of Milwaukee bands.

This weekend WMSE's own Bob Mittnacht (also known as Bob Midnight, from the Midnight Radio show) and his band The Crowning Glories are making an appearance at Points East Pub. The Friday, March 2 gig with The Lackloves starts at 9:30 p.m. Until then, check out "New Friend" off the band's latest self-titled release.

The same night, Milwaukee's 1956 plays Stonefly Brewing Co. with Sunday Flood and Sleep Comes Down. If you're reading this on Tuesday, Feb. 27, you can check out 1956 tonight on WMSE's Local Live show. The band released its sophomore full-length, "Tonight We Kiss" in 2004 and today we play a track off it called "Shaking."

Saturday night brings with it a little power pop from Trolley, who is playing out March 3 at Mad Planet with Limbeck (featuring Jon Phillip of The Benjamins and The Obsoletes fame) Brent's got word that the band's working on recoding a new album soon, so the likelihood of you hearing fresh new material on Saturday is pretty high. But for now, we stick to the oldies but goodies, such as "Alone" off 2003's "Last Chance Dance."

We end this week's session with a singer/songwriter who classifies himself as "gothic country." Christian Williams, who is playing at Circle A Café on Saturday, March 3, has recently released his "Built With Bones" album, which he says is influenced by country/folk music, Southern Gothic Literature and the Book of Revelation.

Happy listening.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
