This weekend, I sampled a Love Rock beer from Milwaukee Brewing Co. for the first time. (It was formerly called Flaming Damsel, but I never had one of those, either). I was drawn in by the name, a tribute to the massive rock in Lake Michigan that had the word "love" spray painted on it.
For a while, Alterra had a Love Rock sandwich on their menu, also a nod to the rock.
Personally, I have fond memories of the rock, which was a water intake that was demolished in 1986, and always wanted to swim out to it as a kid, but never did. So when I saw this beer on tap at Caroline's, 401 S. 2nd St., I had to sample it.
In theory, I love a beer that tributes Milwaukee's history. It turns out, I really liked the taste, too, and these days, I'm super picky about beer. Love Rock, a Vienna-style lager, has a hint of sweetness and a hint of hoppiness without being too overpowering in either direction. Beer enthusiasts, what are your thoughts?
I plan to pick up a sixer of Love Rock soon. Perhaps for Valentine's Day – it seems an appropriate time to drink a beer with the word "love" on the label – and definitely one to drink with friends at Bradford Beach this summer while looking out on the lake where the rock once stood.
