The funding deal between the War Memorial Center and the Milwaukee Art Museum has been finalized. County Executive Chris Abele today returned the deal unsigned to the Milwaukee County Board, who approved it 18-0 on July 25.

Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic expressed relief at Abele's decision to not contest the deal, which was reached with the mediation of State Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske. Dimitrijevic recently met with Abele to request that he allow the compromise to move forward.

"The County Executive said he would veto the compromise, but I am glad he changed his mind," Dimitrijevic said. "The Board unanimously supported this plan because it is the right thing to do for Veterans and the arts community. It ensures the integrity of both institutions and guarantees Milwaukee County residents will be able to enjoy these two treasures for generations to come."

Returning the deal unsigned ensured that the place will be effective immediately. The deal stipulates that War Memorial Center/Milwaukee Art Museum will receive $1.58 million per year from the County from 2014 through 2023. This includes an investment of $1.1 million to the Art Museum and $486,000 to the War Memorial.
