Some Milwaukeeans may recognize the name Iberia Lewis from her Cajun catering and the cuisine at the long-since closed Iberia's Kitchen. Now, her sister Memah (full name Martha R. Austin) is starting a kitchen of her own, except the focus will be on cakes rather than crawfish.

On Sunday, June 1, Memah's Kitchen – located on the second floor of The Shops of Grand Avenue near Lexor Day Spa and Salon – will open to the public. The Cajun bakery will specialize in gourmet cakes and pies – such as caramel cakes and sweet potato pies – as well as other specialty desserts. Memah's Kitchen will also offer catering services, and according to the bakery's Facebook page, it will deliver, too.

The new bakery is celebrating with a grand opening on June 1, offering free tastings and samples starting at 10 a.m. as well as an opportunity to meet the restaurant's namesake Memah. The opening runs until 5 p.m., after which a VIP reception will take place from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.
