With the declaration of a Snow Emergency in Milwaukee, many residents will be looking for places to park their vehicles tonight when the emergency goes into effect at 11 p.m.
Those who usually park in affected areas can park at various Milwaukee Public Schools lots but will need to have their cars out by 7 a.m. Residents can find the lot nearest them at the Department of Public Works Website.
"We have around 30 lots," DPW Commissioner Jeff Mantes said. "We plow those lots and make sure they're available for people to use to get those cars off the street."
Though the roads will be dangerous, Parking Enforcement crews will be out and about, ticketing illegally-parked vehicles and calling in tow trucks to move those vehicles out of the way of plows and salt trucks.
Mantes has some very simple advice to those worried about their vehicles: "Follow the parking regulations," he said.
Mayor Barrett said the city has no plans to cut anybody towed during the storm a break when it comes to the tow fees ($105 for the two, $20/day "storage" in addition to the original citation amount).
"No," Barrett said. "You don't want your car to be towed so make sure you're doing what you can ... Use common sense. If you're in a place that's heavily traveled and there's going to be some pretty strict rules. Don't park there."
The city suspended trash collection earlier Tuesday, allowing grabage trucks to be converted for snow plow use. DPW crews have spent much of the day cleaning up from an overnight storm that dropped between 3-5 inches in the area.
Those crews will take a break later today and return to work at midnight, when the brunt of the next storm -- which some say could bring as much as 15 inches of snow and strong winds -- into the area.
"If you have to get out tomorrow morning, you probably will be able to get out of your street, thought it probably won't be in ideal condition," Mantes said.
