Why you can’t miss it

Field Report is wrapping up a stellar year of touring in support its third album, "Summertime Songs," and the band's taking a victory lap through its hometown to send 2018 off right.

If you’ve never heard of Field Report, it's time to get excited. Field Report is a folk-rock band, but as frontman Christopher Porterfield put it, the new album is "a pop record with a lot of red meat." Porterfield’s music career started in a band (DeYarmond Edison) with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon back in the early 2000s.

The band began to make a name for itself with the release of its self-titled album in 2012. Since then, Field Report has been on a stream of tours, traveling with Jeff Tweedy, opening for Bon Iver at the Bradley Center and playing the South By Southwest music festival.

Come out Friday night to hear a mix of its old and new albums – plus enjoy a special bonus of holiday songs with "friends."

The Hit: "Home (Leave the Lights On)"

This song was initially written for a commercial but was ultimately deemed too sad for the brand. Ironically, it is one of the peppier, and dare I say optimistic, songs from Field Report's sophomore album, "Marigolden."

Here is a song that defines the Field Report contradiction. Do you get up and dance to the melody, or do you sit in the dark and decipher the lyrics? Decide for yourself.

Could Porterfield be referring to the wait between DeYarmond Edison and Field Report? I think so. Give it a listen, and his storytelling will have you wishing he hadn’t waited so long.
