Why you can't miss it

When describing the band Ripe, there always seems to be one word that keeps popping up: BIG. Big band, big sound, big energy. Now combine that with a venue like The Back Room at Colectivo, toss in an emerging band in opener Waker and you have the definition of a can’t miss experience.

This septet, hailing from Boston, formed while attending the esteemed Berklee College of Music. What began as seven individuals with different musical backgrounds and influences has morphed into a musical machine whose sole purpose is to bring its ever-growing fan base to its feet and dance the night away.

Last April, Ripe released their debut album, "Joy in the Wild Unknown," before they made the trip to Milwaukee for a sold-out show a week later. For anyone that made the mistake of missing last year’s show, now is your chance to catch this unique blend of rock, pop, funk and jazz in the person.

Song starter pack

The Hit: "Flipside"

The second single released from the band’s new album, "Flipside" stresses the need to step outside of your comfort zone and a take a chance. This horn-heavy jam also provides this debut project with a fitting title.

"Until you face your fear
How can you hope to grow
To find joy in the wild unknown"

The B-Side Beauty: "Ex-Life"

A sneaky track off of "Joy in the Wild Unknown," "Ex-Life" tells the story of moving on from something familiar through its lyrics and instrumentals: the initial confusion and anger, searching for that quick replacement, slowly building to the moment of clarity and finally reflecting on the journey.

Can't Wait to See It Live: "Goon Squad"

This song from the band’s second EP, "Hey Hello," will have your feet tapping and head bobbing within seconds. Mixing a funky guitar riff with a bell cymbal groove and a splash of brass makes this an easy musical drink of choice.

Bonus pack

Keep your eye on Waker. This group from Nashville makes its return to Milwaukee following a set at the Emerging Artist Series during Summerfest last year.

The Hit: "What Now"

That wave of sound comes out of nowhere.

The B-Side Beauty: "Easy Tiger"

Left off of the band’s upcoming debut album – but very worthy.

Can't Wait to See It Live: "Smoking For A Second"

Great solos across the board – and that sax hook is just nasty.
