OnMilwaukee is proud to highlight Black History Month in Milwaukee and beyond. Our goal is to highlight even more Black-owned businesses and stories. Be sure to visit our first spotlight pick: Tropic MKE, owned by Hyacinth Nembhardt. Hyacinth's Jamaican roots were what inspired Tropic, bringing island vibes in both cocktails and cooking. Check out their sister bar, Concoctions, on Brady! Stop in for a visit.
MKEfest is back! The local celebration of diversity through art, culture and music powered by SamanthaStarr Events is returning this March with a special pop-up gallery night event, which will showcase the art of six talented local artists paired with six fine wines.
MKEfest Canvas & Corks will take place on Saturday, March 25 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Thelma Carol Wine Merchants, 605 W. Virginia St.
During the event, guests are invited to experience the creation of live art pieces at six distinctive artist stations, each of which will be paired with a curated wine from the shop.
Featured artists will include:
- Ashley Trammel-Dallas
- Toni Williams
- Emily Adrienne
- Letasha Smith of Feisty Impressions
- Anthony Brewer (“Kashes”)
- Rodney Dukes
Music, charcuterie and a cash bar featuring beer, wine and spirits will also be available. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase art directly from the featured artists.
Tickets for the pop-up are $30 each and must be purchased online (no sales at the door). Each ticket includes admission to the art show, wine tastings and refreshments.
Lori is an avid cook whose accrual of condiments and spices is rivaled only by her cookbook collection. Her passion for the culinary industry was birthed while balancing A&W root beer mugs as a teenage carhop, fed by insatiable curiosity and fueled by the people whose stories entwine with each and every dish. She’s had the privilege of chronicling these tales via numerous media, including OnMilwaukee and in her book “Milwaukee Food.” Her work has garnered journalism awards from entities including the Milwaukee Press Club.
When she’s not eating, photographing food, writing or recording the FoodCrush podcast, you’ll find Lori seeking out adventures with her husband Paul, traveling, cooking, reading, learning, snuggling with her cats and looking for ways to make a difference.
