Happy National Doughnut Day, everyone! We hope you're doing your best Homer Simpson impression today and noshing a doughnut – or a dozen – to celebrate this most glazed of special days. And to help you go nuts for doughnuts, we're gathered up several local and national bakeries that are offering free doughnuts or special one-of-a-kind flavors for you to dig into.
1. Dunkin'
They may have dropped "Donuts" from its official name, but this national chain is still serving up the pastries – especially today, as you can score a free doughnut with any beverage purchase.
2. Krispy Kreme
Remember when Krispy Kreme first opened in Wisconsin and there were lines around the block and down the street of people wanting their first tasty of the airy, sugary treats? Well, Krispy Kreme might look like that again today as the chain is giving away free doughnuts – any kind, any style – in the hopes of giving away one million doughnuts. Now that is a goal we can all get behind.
3. Donut Squad
In addition to bringing back all of its doughnut varietals – ranging from red velvet to chocolate chip cookie dough and more – Donut Squad, found on the East Side at 2264 N. Prospect Ave. and in Waukesha at 308 W. Broadway Ave., will give you a free doughnut if you share the below post and follow the local bakery on Facebook or Instagram. After all that arduous work (and a purchase over $5), you've unlocked yourself a free doughnut of any kind.
4. Grebe's Bakery
Be a glutton at Grebe's today as the Milwaukee institution will give you a free doughnut with any purchase over 90 cents. Well, if that's the minuscule, practically nonexistent price I have to pay ...
5. Donut Monster
What's better than one day dedicated to delicious doughnuts? TWO days? That's the plan with the local pastry pop-up Donut Monster, which will offer a special new scrumptious option for the holiday – a brown butter bourbon glazed doughnut, filled with rhubarb jam – when it heads out this Saturday and Sunday. That sounds like a monster, all right, one you can find at the Port Washington Farmers Market on Saturday and Hawthorne Coffee Roasters on Sunday, not under your bed or in your closet.
6. Holey Moley
If you're lucky – and up early this morning – you could've snagged free doughnut holes as one of the first 100 customers at this Milwaukee hotspot. But don't feel down if you missed out on that, as the Third Ward wonderland, found at 316 N. Milwaukee St., is also offering not just one but two new flavors – cookies 'n' milk and coconut passion – all day today. And "all day today" will be longer than usual as the doughnut shop extended its hours to 3 p.m. for the special celebration.
7. Walmart
"How may I help you?" asks the back of those famous blue Walmart greeter vests. How about by offering me a free doughnut just for popping into the bakery section of a Walmart Supercenter or Neighborhood Market and asking for tasty free pastry? Because that would help me a lot.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
