Legislation to bring more than 850 on-street parking spaces to the East Side and Riverwest, introduced by Ald. Michael S. D'Amato, was approved earlier this month by the Common Council's Public Safety Committee.
D'Amato said the parking spaces are on streets affected by winter parking regulations that require parking on one side of the street or alternate sides of the street. The winter rules were developed to allow snow plows enough room to clear the street.
"I have been working closely with the Department of Public Works to identify streets not covered under the two-inch rule that can safely and functionally handle parking on both sides of the street between December and March," said Ald. D'Amato. "So far we've been successful in freeing up additional on-street parking spaces in neighborhoods that can definitely use them.
"However, the success of this arrangement is in the hands of area residents," said Ald. D'Amato. "Their cooperation in moving their vehicles during a snow plowing operation will dictate our long-term success."
