OMC is getting down with some reggae rhythms, going Greek on the West Side and clearing our heads lakeside. We think you should, too.
Riddimentary: Diplo Selects Greensleeves (VP Records) -- One of the giants of the remix delves into the archives of British reggae label Greensleeves, which from the end of the '70s forward has released some of the greatest Jamaican music to the world at large, with exciting results. Devotees will know all these songs, but hearing them spliced together and in this new context, feels refreshing and renewing. For those that don't know these great tunes yet -- songs like John Holt's "Police in Helicopter," Price Far I's dread "Survival" and Hugh Mundell's great "Jacqueline," to name but a few -- get ready to experience some killer rhythms and some of the distinctive voices of reggae music. -- Bobby Tanzilo
The Calderone Special pizza -- Admittedly, I've expressed my love for Calderone Club several times through the years. The place, 842 N. Old World 3rd St., rocks and its Calderone Special pizza is one of my favorites.
Going to the lake to think -- It's a somewhat abstract recommendation this week for me, I have found that driving to Lake Michigan and parking in the lot next to Northpoint Custard is a great place to reflect about life. I do this almost weekly, sometimes twice a week, and I enjoy noting the change in color of the water, the slow melt of the snow and ice and, on some days, the fury of the winter waves. It's extremely calming and meditative to take five or 10 on the shore of this Great Lake. Try it. -- Molly Snyder
Golden Gyros -- Milwaukee is far from lacking in the gyro department, but Golden Gyros, 7233 W. Lincoln Ave. in West Allis, is an absolute must if you're a fan of the pita-wrapped sandwich. The West Side restaurant is mainly a take-out and drive-through stop due to its very limited seating, but the gyros, cheeseburgers and specialty Greek fare are definitely worth the trip. Try to save room for custard, but definitely don't leave without an order of Greek fries. -- Renee Lorenz
Gilles' frozen custard -- This a custard-loving town and if you ask 10 different people for their favorite, you'll get 10 different answers. Me? I'm solidly and permanently entrenched in the Gilles' camp. I grew up in the neighborhood, went to grade school and high school nearby and even worked at the stand for a few days after high school (Pius pride). To this day, when I get the craving for custard, I make the short trek west to 76th and Bluemound. For my money, there is no better treat in Milwaukee than a half-chocolate, half-vanilla pint from Gilles', which by the way, just celebrated its 73rd birthday. -- Andrew Wagner
