In case you didn't hear, Oprah won the Golden Globes last night. Yes, they handed out multiple awards to multiple winners from television and movies, but really those were all consolation trophies after the media icon delivered her rousing, triumphant and powerful speech accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award.
And it all started with Milwaukee, as Winfrey opened her stirring statement with a story about "sitting on the linoleum floor of her mother's house in Milwaukee" in 1964, watching Sidney Poitier become the first black man in history to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Watch the above clip to see the nice little shoutout – starting at about 50 seconds in – to the town that helped raise her (she was actually born in Kosciusko, Mississippi) and that some of her family still calls home. In fact, she was just in town last month for UWM's graduation ceremony, where her half-sister Patricia Lee was one of the esteemed graduates.
But more importantly, watch the above clip for the profound words on what representation means, the need for journalism and truth, and the women of all industries who've withstood and stood up against sexual harassment in the past year, as well as throughout history.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
