Glancing at the calendar the other day, I recognized that this block of eight consecutive days certainly equates to a mixed bag of emotions. Having just passed the 10th anniversary of the attacks on some of the our greatest landmarks, and rapidly approaching the one year mark of Milwaukee coming together for #saveteecycle, I'm reflecting, yet continuing to look forward.
Much has happened in the past 10 years. Hell, much has transpired within the past year alone. Some wounds have healed, and others, not so much.
Among the many thoughts that have whizzed through my head, I keep circling back to those that represent resilience, community and gratitude.
In order to acknowledge the past and inspire for the future, we must take what we've learned and try in our own way to pay it forward.
So about those thoughts ... some of them looked like this:
• Living in a country that allows us to be free with our speech, thoughts and associations. I will never take these privileges for granted. I applaud and thank others who do the same.
• That angels far out number the trolls. I will be an angel to as many people as I possibly can.
• Perspective. When the stresses in life seem overwhelming, there is always someone who needs our help more than the pity we place on ourselves. Moving forward, I'm going to gently remind others that they are indeed blessed.
• Durability. As a nation and a community, we proved that we are durable. We have a strong heart and intoxicating spirit that keeps on fighting for what we believe in. Must keep on fighting the good fight.
• The social networks, which have allowed us to lend a hand, strengthen a community, come together and amplify a voice when people may not know one exists. My voice will continue to be used in this capacity. I'll still be one of the first people to raise my hand and ask how I can help.
• A thick candy coated shell protects my soft nougaty center ... and boy am I thankful for that. I will help others who may feel like they're not strong realize that they indeed are.
• Relationships: past, present and future happen for a reason. Be thankful for the lessons learned as part of these tight, supportive inner circles. Appreciate and reciprocate the trust and generosity that these networks give to you.
• Quality over quantity reigns supreme.
Moral of my story here: each one of us can change the world, we just need to give it a shot. Why not reach out using your social networks, and see how you can lend a hand ... an ear ... or help bring awareness to someone (or something) that could use a pick me up.

Some may call her a digital wizardess. Others may call her a bolt of snark ready to strike. But we like to call her Katie. All ninjas must have a day job, and hers is with advertising agency Boelter + Lincoln in the Third Ward. As "BootyP," her wit, criticism and comedic banter have lit up the Twitter world in Milwaukee - and now she's attacking the blogosphere. Her faithful followers know her no-BS approach to most any topic.
Her snarky-yet professional personality makes her a must-read, must-know person in this city. You can find her 14,500 feet in the air, or walking down the street in a pair of stilettos with a yoga mat strapped to her back.
Want to bribe Katie? Best to deliver massive quantities of Diet Coke, candy (gummy candy more specifically), tea and music her way.
