It's a jewel of a building and a diamond in the rough near the shadows of Mitchell Field. To those who venture inside the cozy Robert's Tavern, the reward is some of the best sandwiches in the city and one comfortable place to sit back and forget the everyday hassles of the city.
Owned and operated by Robert Krause, this century old building has been a tavern since 1902,and the leaded glass and exquisite woodwork still stand as testament to a time when craftsmanship spoke for itself.
That same craftsmanship continues in the kitchen, where the quality of the ingredients also speaks for themselves, as well. The pair of daily homemade soups come from a repertoire of about 60 different recipes, where everything is done from scratch the old fashioned way. With a hearty bowl of soup under your belt, the next object of your attack should be one of almost two dozen sandwiches that fill the menu. Once again, the attention to detail is evident as all meats are roasted on premises and chicken, tuna, egg, ham and salmon salads are made fresh each day. Robert's Ruben is the restaurant's most popular sandwich. Thin hand-trimmed slices of corned beef are piled high and grilled with Swiss cheese, mustard and a little sauerkraut. The broiled pork chop with fried onions rivals the ones at State Fair, and the ham clubhouse is a two-fisted monster loaded with plenty of grilled ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato. All three of these sandwiches are winners.
It's a mixed bag. The proximity to the airport brings a diverse group, and a loyal clientele from throughout the city keep the place filled. Whether young or old, dressed in a suit or in jeans, the atmosphere welcomes all.
Inexpensive.
Robert's is a tavern and the vibrant bar does quite a business. It offers excellent martinis and cocktails and a nice assortment of draft beer. The special holiday beverages are some off the best in town. Mark Robert's down as one of the classiest cheap eats in the city.
