School-themed bar and restaurant Room 434 is closed after owner Kevin Sloan was unable to renegotiate an extension on the lease.

"When we moved The Social to the new locale there was still over a year left on the lease so we turned it into Room 434," says Sloan. "I was hoping to get another couple of years on an extension which never came to be."

The Social, a lounge and eatery owner by Sloan and currently located at 170 S. 1st St., was originally in the 434 space, 434 S. 2nd St.

Sloan says the building owner is considering expanding the neighboring bar, Zad's. But Sloan doesn't have hard feelings about his decision. "He has been a good landlord for the last seven years and it's certainly within his right to use the space for his own needs," he says.

In 2006 and 2007, OnMilwaukee.com partnered with Room 434 for the city's first adult spelling bees. Sloan does not plan to move the Room 434 concept to another location. At this point he will focus on The Social.
