The State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation has reopened two-way traffic on Capitol Drive between Oakland Avenue and Lake Drive in the Village of Shorewood.

Traffic has been limited to one lane eastbound in this section of Capitol Drive since April. A new concrete roadway has been constructed and work will continue between the curb and private property through the duration of the project.

All Milwaukee County bus routes will resume service on Capitol on Friday. Buses had been rerouted to avoid the construction area.

"This is a major project milestone for Capitol Drive businesses and Shorewood residents. We are excited to see the return of normal traffic patterns and ecstatic that some parking is returning to Capitol Drive", said Jim Plaisted, Executive Director of the Shorewood Business Improvement District.

The Village of Shorewood and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are partners on the full reconstruction of 1.2 miles of Capitol Drive in the Village of Shorewood.

The project extends from Estabrook Parkway to Lake Drive. All pavement, curbs, gutters and sidewalks are being replaced as part of the project.

Streetscaping elements and street lights are incorporated into the plan of improvement and the existing Oak Leaf Trail structure over Capitol Drive will be replaced.

The project is expected to be completed in November.
