During pregnancy, some women radically change their intake and stop drinking alcoholic -- and caffeinated -- beverages. Other women are less hardcore about their pregnancy diet, and will continue to imbibe. But what are your thoughts? Is it OK to drink alcohol while pregnant or not? Sound-off, OnMilwaukee.com readers.
Yes, a little alcohol is fine during pregnancy. Obviously you can’t get loaded when you’re pregnant, or drink alcohol on a daily basis, but the infrequent glass of wine or champagne to mark a special occasion is acceptable. Women in Europe do it all the time. Even my doctor said it was fine to have an alcoholic beverage once in a while, especially if it eases stress. Stress is worse for an unborn child than a little alcohol now and again.
No, not a drop of liquor during pregnancy. There are too many unknowns about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome so it’s just not worth the risk. Plus, women are transitioning into the role of the mother during pregnancy, so it’s important to start modeling acceptable behavior. Drinking during pregnancy, like smoking during pregnancy, is just wrong.
