Last week, a local advisory committee approved preliminary engineering on a proposed modern streetcar line for Downtown Milwaukee.

The final projected comes with a $95.8 million price tag. More than half the total cost ($54.9 million) would come from what remains of federal grant, which has sat idle for years. The remainder would come from additional federal grants and tax incremental financing.

Once completed, the streetcar's initial route will run between the Intermodal Station and the Lower East Side, running every 10-15 minutes, seven days per week with riders paying just $1 for each trip.

Opponents of the line say it's a waste of tax dollars, though the grant specifically states the money is to be used on new, modern transit options. But the area bus system is suffering from declining ridership, budget cuts and fare increases while some city streets are riddled with potholes and area freeways are in disarray.

This week, we ask you what you think: does Downtown Milwaukee really need a streetcar system?
