If things look a little greener around here this April, there's a good reason. Our editorial staff is busy expanding the ideals of Earth Day into a month-long celebration of energy conservation, alternative transportation, recycling tips and about a million ways you can be a better friend to the planet. Welcome to Green Month, Milwaukee.

About five years ago, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) asked the Brewers to add a soy sausage to their lineup of sausage racers, which features a bratwurst, hot dog, Polish sausage, chorizo and Italian sausage.

More recently, in one of our infamous April Fool’s spoof stories, OnMilwaukee.com wrote about vegetarian Prince Fielder calling for a soy dog to be added to the sausage race. Of course, we were joking … but maybe not completely.

Is it even remotely possible that a veggie sausage could race with their meaty counterparts?

Most likely not, simply because the sausage race is a promotion for Klement’s sausages, and the company does not feature a veggie sausage of any kind. However, perhaps there are more marketing opportunities here.

Maybe Outpost Natural Foods would like to sponsor a soy sausage in the race? It’s not likely this is an option, but for the love of Green Month on OnMilwaukee.com, it’s worth revisiting.
