88Nine Radio Milwaukee named veteran music DJ Ken Sumka as the new host for the station's afternoon drive-time slot, running from 3 until 6 p.m. on weekdays.
In addition to the weekday afternoon shift, Sumka will also work on production, imaging and creating content for Radio Milwaukee's website – including hosting "Tiny Hits In A Perfect World," a featurette celebrating under-appreciated and under-heard songs from music history.
Since moving to Milwaukee with his family in October 2013, Sumka has worked at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee as a backup and weekend host. Before the move, he worked at Chicago's AAA WXRT-FM from 1994 through 2013, as well as serving as an airborne reporter for WMAQ and WBBM-AM from 1998 through 2009. He also spent a year prior to his time at WXRT working as an afternoon drive host at WCBR-FM (The Bear).
"Since we moved here in 2013, we have found Milwaukee to be a breath of fresh air, with so many new places to explore and discover," Sumka said in a press release. "We also landed in a great neighborhood, Wauwatosa’s Jacobus Park, with top notch neighbors and great schools. It feels like we've already lived here for a decade.
"Radio Milwaukee is a great family, not so much a place to work as an extension of my family. Everyone at 88Nine has been gracious and kind. I've never had a radio experience that was so warm and friendly. I look forward to that feeling even growing now that I'm in every day."
