On Saturday night, hip-hop will finally hit the Summerfest 50 main stage – and as if to make up for that lack of it, not one, not two, but three rap acts will take over the American Family Insurance Amphitheater tonight.
Indeed, the joint forces of Future, Big Sean and Migos will perform on the penultimate night of the Big Gig, starting at 7:30 p.m. If you're looking for something else, however, all sorts of genres are tucked all across the festival grounds Saturday night – from pop (DNCE at the Miller Lite Oasis) to country (LOCASH at the U.S. Cellular Connection Stage) and rock of all subgenres and generations.
Here's everything you need to know going into the second-to-last day (*sheds single tear*) of Summerfest.
Today's ticket deal
"Make a Child Smile" Day
From noon until 3 p.m., the first 1,500 patrons who donate new or gently used children's books – preferably picture books and early readers for children ages birth through 10 – toward the Betty Brinn Children's Museum with a $10 minimum value will receive a free admission ticket. The ticket is valid the day of the promotion only.
OnMilwaukee staff picks for July 8
"Cake by the Ocean" will become cake by the lake as the Joe Jonas-fronted pop group DNCE takes the Miller Lite Oasis stage Saturday night. But really, there had better be cake. -- Matt Mueller
I'm doing Summerfest by day again and, as a Peter Townsend forever fangirl, plan to catch Substitute, a The Who tribute band, at 3:30 p.m. at Uline Warehouse Stage. The Future/Big Sean/Migos show at the Amphitheater that night looks good too, but I gotta remember The Big Gig is a marathon, not a sprint. -- Molly Snyder
My country-rap extravaganza continues tonight, as I'll be back at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater for the epic Future, Big Sean and Migos mashup. This is one of Summerfest's most impressive gets in terms of booking big acts that are hot right now, different than the festival's usual variety and hugely popular with young audiences. The last few years, Summerfest has brought Outkast, Kendrick Lamar and Pitbull to the amphitheater, to the delight of local fans, and this trio of hip hop heavy hitters is a home run (sorry for the metaphor). If I wasn't there, I'd be singing along to Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, 10 p.m. at Uline Warehouse Stage, like the emo 15-year-old I once was. -- Jimmy Carlton
