It may be a tad early for a sunburn in these parts, but the summer movie season already is in full swing. The release of "Iron Man 2" and "Robin Hood" got things off to a strong start and things continue this week with "Shrek Forever After" and next week with "Sex and the City 2."
Bruce Olson, president of Milwaukee-based Marcus Theatres, which operates 668 screens in Wisconsin and six other Midwestern states, expects business at the box office to be brisk as other new releases hit the screen in the coming weeks.
"Our biggest week of the year is the week between Christmas and New Year's," Olson said. "But, summer is a longer season. With kids out of school and home from college, every weeknight is like a Friday or Saturday night."
Olson said that the idea of the "summer blockbuster" is a relatively recent phenomenon.
"About 30 years ago, summer wasn't very good," he said. "But, the release patterns changed. People have more time in the summer.
"The first Friday in May kicks off the summer movie season. We've already seen "Iron Man" and "Robin Hood" and those are two separate audiences. Now, we've got "Shrek" and "Sex and the City" coming. Those are four very different types of movies and they will all do very well.
"The studios do a good job of putting out a lot of pictures to very specific target markets."
Olson said that comedies tend to pull big audiences in the summer, with several of this year's candidates looking for "'The Hangover'-type success."
"There are some fun things coming up," Olson said. "I think films like 'The A-Team' and 'The Expendables' could do really well.
"It should be a good summer. There truly is something for everyone."
