"Arrow," based on the DC comic book character Green Arrow, had been a hit for the CW since its first airing in the fall of 2012. Because super hero films do well at the box office, networks have followed suit on the small screen in an effort to pick up more viewers.

Although the show got a critical reception from the writers who always seem to hate the shows you like, there were a number of outstanding performances that made it one of the better new shows on air.

In the second season last year, the "Arrow" crew met "The Flash" in a cross-over testing ground to see how the speedster would be received in a procedural action/drama that was known for its layered storytelling with numerous plot lines and flashbacks.

Starting tonight, "The Flash" kicks off its own show, and "Arrow" starts its third season on Wednesday. Locally, WVTV-TV is taking advantage of the heavy-hitting comic hero nights to launch its new schedule.

To build on the anticipated launch of "The Flash," the local station is teaming up with WLUM-FM 102.1 for a watch, listen and win contest. Viewers can win VIP tickets to Fantasticon, which OnMilwaukee.com reported on earlier this week.

Also new to CW this fall is rising star Gina Rodriguez in the drama "Jane the Virgin." The show features a strong Latina cast in the tale of a young woman who is accidentally artificially inseminated due to a clerical mistake at a hospital.

Returning to the CW lineup are new episodes of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Supernatural."

Weeknight programming gets a boost with Steve Harvey on "Family Feud" and a new pop culture game show, "Celebrity Name Game" hosted by Craig Ferguson.

Charlie Sheen’s "Anger Management" will join "The King of Queens," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Community" on channel 18.

The daytime lineup gets a shakeup with "Hot Bench," a court show that features three judges hearing cases and having to deliberate in their quarters. The new-concept show is produced by Judge Judy.

A GOOD CAUSE: WLDB- FM B93.3 had its sixth annual "Call To Care Radiothon" last week to increase awareness and raise funds for After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD).

B93.3 morning show hosts Jane Mantenere and Carol Vonn auctioned off items including a trip for two to stay at the all-inclusive RIU Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, four floor tickets to James Taylor at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Nov. 4, overnight stays at the "Pink Room" at InterContinental Milwaukee, Grand Geneva Resort & Spa including golf for two, the Bridgeport Resort, and the Country Springs Hotel, restaurant gift cards to The Capital Grille, Maggiano’s Little Italy and more. Additionally, Kesslers Diamonds matched bids dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000.

"We are proud to partner with ABCD for the sixth consecutive year to continue the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease that affects everyone. We all know someone who has had their life changed by it. It’s important to get the word out and raise public awareness and funds for ABCD, which should be one of the first calls you make when you or someone you know receives breast cancer diagnosis," Vonn said.
