A couple of my buddies back in college were architecture majors. Invariably, during a night of partying, one of them would say, do or drink something that made me comment "Remind me never to go into one of the buildings you design."
I thought about my boys the other day.
Several times a week, I drive on Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa and turn west on Bluemound. If you're familiar with the area, you'll know that I'm speaking of the busy corner just west of the zoo that features Mo's Irish Pub and Edwardo's Pizza.
I drive this stretch so often -- and so seldom does it change -- that I usually don't give it much thought. While sitting at a stoplight the other day, I glanced over at Edwardo's and thought to myself, "Man, that is an ugly building. Wonder if one of my college buddies -- or Mike Brady -- designed it ..."
As I continued west, I looked at a bunch of buildings that I seldom notice. A bank building. A dental office. An office building with a drive-through to a parking lot. The Jimmy John's building. A rug store. And, a terra cotta nightmare of an office building.
Things don't get much better when you drive west, but I wondered if the stretch from Mayfair Road to 111th Street was the ugliest strip of buildings in the suburbs.
Do you know of any that are worse? What the hell were the architects smoking in the ‘70s when they came up with these designs?
