Gov. Scott Walker has released a statement about this morning's shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek.

"While the situation in Oak Creek continues to develop rapidly, we are working with the FBI and local law enforcement. I became aware of the situation late this morning and continue to receive updated briefings.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence.

"At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends.

"Tonette and I ask everyone to join us in praying for the victims and their families, praying for the safety of our law enforcement and first responder professionals and praying for strength and healing for this entire community and our state."

Mayor Tom Barrett's statement reads:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their family members in today's tragedy. For those injured, we hope for a speedy and full recovery.

"I strongly condemn this senseless act of violence. The Milwaukee region values its reputation as a region rich with diversity and the Sikh community of Southeastern Wisconsin is an important and positive part of that.

"The Milwaukee Police Department will continue to offer assistance in any way that is needed."

Congresswoman Gwen Moore's statement:

"I am deeply saddened by today's events which took the lives of these innocent members of our community. My thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those that have lost loved ones as well as the families of those injured in this senseless act of violence.

"I will continue to monitor this situation as it develops."

Sen. Ron Johnson also released a statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families of yet another senseless act of violence in America. I have full confidence in the legal authorities that will be investigating this heinous crime."

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, at the Sikh Temple in Brookfield, said:

"My heart goes out to those in the Sikh Community who had their profession of faith interrupted by a senseless act of violence. Together, as a community of faith, we have an obligation to come together in a show of support during a time of sadness and challenge. On behalf of my family, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."
