Eoin McCarthy didn’t set out to write a Christmas song, but he did, and it’s a keeper – especially if you like sad, boozy stories about unrequited love and already have a penchant for The Pogues.
"The song (called 'Roisín') is about a guy who moved back to Ireland to find a girl, but instead ends up a homeless drunk and in a last ditch effort writes a letter to her hoping she will meet him at Christ church in Dublin for one last New Year’s kiss," says McCarthy.
According to McCarthy, who is originally from Dublin but currently lives in Milwaukee and fronts the band Whiskey of the Damned, the song is loosely based on an Irish girl that he dated a while back.
"Her name wasn't Roisín, but I thought it was a better idea to change the name rather than upset someone unintentionally," says McCarthy.
"Roisín" features other members from Whiskey of the Damned and was produced and engineered in November by Jeff Hamilton in his Downtown "Hamtone Studios." Whiskey of the Damned band manager, Biju Zimmerman, shot the video on his phone.
"The song is great," says Zimmerman. "Catchy, fun and it has sleigh bells in it."
McCarthy says he wrote the song four hours before the studio session.
"I just showed it to the lads and they learned it on the spot and then we recorded it," says McCarthy. "I didn't even realize Biju was shooting a video. I thought he was just taking pictures. Next thing I knew he sent this wonderfully edited thing he threw together on his phone. The guy is incredible."
