A couple of days ago when I was walking on Wisconsin Avenue near the mall, a Jeep Cherokee filled with young (or youngish) men drove by me on the opposite side of the street.
I noticed the vehicle immediately because I used to own a very similar Jeep, and also because there was so much smoke billowing from the windows. It occurred to me after a few seconds that I was staring, and so I looked away.
As soon as I did, I heard someone from the car yell, "OnMilwaukee.com sucks!"
I had to pause for a second. Did I really just hear that? I mentally hit the rewind button in my mind and sure enough, that is what was yelled. I looked at the Jeep, which had been stopped for a spell at a red light, but was barreling down the street.
It took me about an hour to fully process this.
On the one hand, it’s a crappy thing to yell out a car window. However, I was also amused and surprised and a bit flattered that someone actually recognized me and then exerted the energy to make such a big reaction.
Of course, the main reason I can find this so entertaining is because I know the truth is we really don’t suck. Fourteen years in business and still going strong (we just had one of our largest traffic weeks in history) proves this.
And as we know, it’s always better to incite a reaction of any kind than no reaction at all. Even if it’s sucky.
