In February we told you about the Bomb Shelter, a new beer-centric old-school Walker's Point tavern opening in the former Monkey Bar space at 1517 S. 2nd St.

Owner and local beer aficionado Greg Landig has been working hard all spring and says that the bar officially opens its doors this Saturday, June 21 at 3 p.m. The big grand opening party is yet to come, however.

Bar manager Tom Wright tells us they've got a few weekly specials planned:
Sunday: Polka party
Monday: Retro night
Tuesday: Spirits-tasting club
Wednesday: Beer-tasting club
Thursday-Saturday: TBD

When Landig plans a "retro night," he's not talking Lycra bodysuits and Poison hits. His bar honors "classic Milwaukee" and pays tribute to the classic corner varieties that flourished during a time when locally-brewed beer seeped from the city's pores.

The Bomb Shelter is hosting the Milwaukee Homebrew Competition this July. Are you a master brewer? All the details are right here.

Julie Lawrence Special to OnMilwaukee.com

OnMilwaukee.com staff writer Julie Lawrence grew up in Wauwatosa and has lived her whole life in the Milwaukee area.

As any “word nerd” can attest, you never know when inspiration will strike, so from a very early age Julie has rarely been seen sans pen and little notebook. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee it seemed only natural that she major in journalism. When OnMilwaukee.com offered her an avenue to combine her writing and the city she knows and loves in late 2004, she knew it was meant to be. Around the office, she answers to a plethora of nicknames, including “Lar,” (short for “Larry,” which is short for “Lawrence”) as well as the mysteriously-sourced “Bill Murray.”
