As the nation continues to battle the coronavirus, working together to stop its spread and stop it from overwhelming our healthcare system, Gov. Tony Evers announced Monday morning his most strict policy yet: a "Safer at Home" order, which will go in effect at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25 through 8 a.m. on Friday, April 24. 

Gov. Evers' order coincides with a similar order from Mayor Tom Barrett, who announced during a morning media call on Monday that he will institute a "Stay at Home" policy for the City of Milwaukee as well, as reported by Urban Milwaukee. Barrett's order will go into effect starting Wednesday at 12:01 a.m.

Evers' order – which was officially issued in fuller detail on Tuesday – is not a "shelter-in-place"-style lockdown but instead an increased emphasis on people avoiding unnecessary and inessential trips, and limiting travel. All non-essential businesses, according to Evers' announcement, will close; all non-essential travel is to be prohibited; and small gatherings – even as seemingly inconsequential as dinner parties, sleepovers and play dates – should be avoided in order to keep one's circle of interactions small and keep the spread as contained as possible.

However, Evers notes in his announcement that people will still be able to go outside for occasional walks and exercise, and make essential trips – such as for groceries, medication, taking care of a family member in another household or visiting the doctor – as long as social distancing practices are still followed. As reported by Urban Milwaukee and noted by City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Jeanette Kowalik in Monday's announcement, restaurants are included in the list of businesses considered essential or necessary, which means they will still be able to provide curbside and delivery orders during the 30-day "Safer at Home" policy.
