Peter Sciortino’s
Last year, Peter Sciortino's and Rocket Baby had to share the title of Milwaukee's best bakery. But apparently the longtime Brady Street staple had enough of sharing, as it claimed the top of the podium for itself in 2017's Best of Dining poll, squeaking by Rocket Baby by less than 25 votes.
Peter Sciortino’s may be new to having the top spot to itself in the past couple of years, but it's by no means new to Milwaukee. The Brady Street icon first opened its doors in 1947, and despite being sold in 1997, many of the breads, rolls, cookies and pastries are the same ones sold in 1947. And that tradition scored the top prize in this category in 2017.
Last year's co-winner Rocket Baby nabbed the silver medal – as well as the OnMilwaukee editors' pick – while Grebe's, Simma's and National Bakery and Deli wrapped up the rest of the top five.
Runner’s up:
2. Rocket Baby
3. Grebe’s Bakery
4. Simma’s Bakery
5. National Bakery and Deli
OnMilwaukee editors’ pick: Rocket Baby
Lori Fredrich’s pick: Miss Molly’s Cafe & Pastry Shop
It's newly minted, and I’ve likely only scratched the surface of what it offers. However, when it comes to sweets, I’ve developed a soft spot for Miss Molly’s Cafe & Pastry Shop, where there are myriad well-executed indulgences to be found. Cakes are tender and inventive, often incorporating herbal notes in frostings and glazes. Scones are tender and well-flavored, and the bakery style cookies are always a treat. Pair any one of them with a cup of Anodyne coffee and you’ve got a combination made in heaven.
