Milwaukee's best steak, 2012
For the sixth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Concordia University. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2012."
Your votes are in, Milwaukee, and you have selected the winners of OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2012. We're announcing the results of this readers' poll, including our editors' pick, in a series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
According to you, readers, there's never been a better steak in Milwaukee than the steak to be had at Five O' Clock Steakhouse. OnMilwaukee.com's Best of Dining competition is in its sixth year, and for every one of those years Five O' Clock Steakhouse has run away with the title Best Steak.
The restaurant, located at 2416 W. State St., was established in 1948 by the Coerper family and was known at the time as Coerper's Five O' Clock Club. The supper club took its name from the time of day when patrons would be treated to a free drink.
Current owners Georgia Papadopoulos and George Kalkounos entered the scene in 2005 and have preserved the swanky, "Mad Men"-esque atmosphere of the original club.
Patrons know they can count on affordable but delicious cuts of beef, friendly service and a meal seasoned and garnished by the harvest from Papadopoulos' courtyard garden.
The Five O' Clock Steakhouse's excellence has been nationally recognized, and the restaurant will be featured on an upcoming episode of "Food Paradise" on the Travel Channel.
The OnMilwaukee.com editorial staff recognizes that you can't top a winner and agreed with readers, picking Five O'Clock Steakhouse as its editors' choice, too.
As usual, it was a neck-and-neck race with Carnevor, who finished in a close second.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Five O' Clock Steakhouse
3. Mr. B's Steakhouse
4. Eddie Martini's
5. Mason Street Grill
6. Capital Grille
7. Ward's House of Prime
8. Milwaukee Chophouse, Jackson Grill (tie)
9. Mo's: A Place for Steaks
11. Butch's Old Casino
12. Milwaukee Steakhouse
13. Joey Gerard's
14. Dream Dance Steak
I'd agree that Jackson Grill is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Five O'Clock Steakhouse. As is Eddie Martini's, Ward's House of Prime, Capital Grill, and even Carnevor (which despite not being thoroughly impressed with still exceeds the lack of service and the rapidly declining quality of Five O'Clock)
Jackson coming in at a tie for 8th shows that people don't know what they are talking about.
