In Movies & TV

Action classics, new animated hits and Netflix original TV shows are all closing out the summer in style in August.

What's new on Netflix for August 2017

I'll be real with you all: August at the movies looks pretty horrible. There's a few glimmers of hope – a new Bigelow, a new Soderbergh, a new movie from the writer/director behind "Short Term 12" – but otherwise, it's a wasteland of dumped wannabe blockbusters, somehow not direct-to-DVD thrillers and a movie called "The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature." That's a real thing.

So why not stay home and binge some Netflix – especially with the lineup coming next month.

Looking for some big Hollywood action blockbusters to wrap up the summer movie season? The streaming service will pick up "The Matrix" (YAY!) and its two sequels (grumble grumble). Want some big-name directors? How's Tarantino ("Jackie Brown") sound? The kids will have hits both old ("Small Soldiers") and new ("Sing"), while those who enjoy failed 2016 Oscar bait starring resurgent actors – an oddly particular niche, I will say – will have McConaughey's "Gold" and Michael Keaton's McDonalds biopic "The Founder." Want to be emotionally devastated and outraged? Try on "Funny Games" (U.S.) – or don't. It's brutal.

And, of course, there's a healthy serving of Netflix originals, including the Marvel team-up "The Defenders" and the horror-thriller remake "Death Note," which frankly sounds more interesting that almost everything actually hitting theaters the rest of the month.

So despair not, movie lovers. A movie about an evil polaroid camera may be en route (BUT ACTUALLY) but so are some stream-worthy gems.
