Guess who's ready to finally freaking end 2016 and move onto the hopefully greener pastures of 2017? Well, yes, pretty much everybody, but especially Netflix, which jumped the gun on the new year by announcing its new entertainment offerings – and dearly departeds – for January. And judging by the list, at least the new year will be starting off strong on the streaming front.

On day one of 2017, for instance, Netflix will be dropping a plethora of cinema classics for you to celebrate the end of 2016, ranging from "Braveheart" to "E.T." to "Boogie Nights" and "The Shining." There will also be a few newer gems, like "V for Vendetta" and "Hugo," joining the fray, as well as all of the pre-Zack Snyder Superman movies – which is to say when they weren't terrible (mostly ... sort of ... OK, never mind).

The solid lineup continues into the rest of January too, with the new horror hit "It Follows" and Netflix's new "Series of Unfortunate Events" show featuring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf hitting your homes. Plus, two of the best offerings from this past year's Milwaukee Film Festival, the Iranian horror flick "Under the Shadow" and the stellar music doc "Miss Sharon Jones!," will be available for those who missed them a few months ago – or who simply want to watch some great movies again.

Of course, all these new additions mean some have to leave, so say goodbye to "Saving Private Ryan," "Sixteen Candles," "Bring It On," "The Fast and the Furious" and a whole trove of ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries (including the delightful "Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks"). Sad, but to be expected, and there's so much quality stuff arriving that I can't be too upset ... wait, does that say the Nicolas Cage "The Wicker Man" is leaving Netflix? HOW DARE YOU, NETFLIX!

Never mind, 2017 is going to be the worst all over again.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
