The Waxwing lands new East Side space

The Waxwing, an art gallery and artists' boutique, will move from its Shorewood location to new East Side digs, 1800 E. North Ave. The space – which is four times larger than the current location – is on the corner of North and Oakland Avenues – exactly where Pizza Man was before it was consumed by a fire.

"The space we're taking on is a totally raw space, so we'll be launching a Kickstarter campaign within the next couple of weeks to help with build-out expenses," says owner Steph Davies.

Currently, The Waxwing sells the work of 100 local and national artists, and will be able to increase that number after the move.

"We'll work with local craftspeople to build shelving designed specifically to house the work of our artists," she says.

Davies also plans to add a stage for local bands and a room where artists can host workshops and classes.

"We are sad to leave Shorewood as it has been like a second home to me and the residents there have been the foundation of our success. They supported us through thick and thin and we're honored to have customers that we see on a weekly basis," says Davies. "We are excited though to be moving near local staples like Beans & Barley, Little Monsters and The Oriental Theatre."

The Waxwing opened in Shorewood in 2012.

Davies hopes to be up and running in the new location in time for holiday shopping.

"We hope our current customers will follow us and that new people will discover us," says Davies. "We’re so excited for this change."
