On Saturday, May 12, Lloyd Barbee Montessori School, 4456 N. Teutonia Ave., will host the sixth annual Milwaukee Public Montessori Peace Summit, which this year focuses on the theme of "Kindness Rocks."
The event, which is free and open to all, kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 4.
The annual Peace Summit brings together students, teachers, staff and families from MPS’ unmatched community of eight public Montessori programs to help promote peace in the city. It offers a chance to meet, greet, collaborate and build community to hopefully then work together to promote leadership and positive expression, work for social justice and build community.
There will be workshops, student-led panel discussions, local organization networking, collaborative art projects, gardening, a drum circle, cultural performers, meditation, mindfulness, family yoga, origami, karaoke, storytelling, henna, face painting and speakers.
Most of the activities are free, including henna, face painting, yoga, origami, Black Lives Matter kite-making, the painting of "kindness" rocks and more.
There will also be a variety of food trucks on hand at the school, in the Garden Homes neighborhood, as well as screen printing of "Straight Outta Montessori" T-shirts. Bring your own shirt and you can print for $5, or buy a shirt and print it for $10.
Ajamou Butler will present the keynote address, Brother Heal the Hood.
