Singer/songwriter/feminist/activist/author Ani DiFranco will perform at The Pabst Theater on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The world-celebrated SistaStrings will open for DiFranco along with longtime Brew City favorite, Peter Mulvey.
DiFranco is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her seminal first live album, "Living In Clip," and her label Righteous Babe Records is currently offering a 25th anniversary remastered edition of the double album.
Feminist icon and Grammy winner DiFranco is considered the mother of the DIY movement, being one of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. Her music embraces folk, punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul and electronica. Currently, she lives in New Orleans.
SistaStrings, featuring Monique and Chauntee Ross, lived in Milwaukee most of their lives, but moved to Nashville last year. In 2022, the duo appeared on “Saturday Night Live” with Brandi Carlile and later went on tour with her.
Last summer, they released a record with Mulvey on DiFranco's Righteous Babe label, "Love Is the Only Thing." Mulvey, a former Milwaukeean living in Massachusettes, has recorded 19 albums, fronted thousands of live shows and published a book.
DiFranco published a book in 2019, "No Walls and the Recurring Dream: A Memoir" – I interviewed her about it here – and will release her first children's book, "The Knowing," this March on Penguin Kids.
The new book encapsulates ideas that DiFranco feels strongly about sharing with her own children and all children: the authority to respect the world around you with love and compassion, and the strength of individual power and collective responsibility.
