City of Milwaukee Health Department hosts the 23rd annual Back to School Health Fair, Saturday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Milwaukee Academy of Science, 2000 W. Kilbourn Ave.

In addition to offering free school supplies and backpacks (while supplies last), the free-and-open-to-all event also can provide CDC-recommended vaccines, along with various community services and partners.

There will be free food from Pete’s Pops and food trucks, including KT’s Wok, Twisted Plants and I’ll Take a Bite of That.

Plus, expect free activities that include roller skating and field games led by Milwaukee County Parks and Recreation, chalk art facilitated by Marina Lee, face painting and glitter tattoos by Diana’s Snazy Face Painting and the chance to explore Milwaukee Fire Department, Milwaukee Police Department and Milwaukee Department of Public Works vehicles.

Attendees will also be entered to win free tickets to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee County Zoo, Betty Brinn Children’s Museum and a Brewers game.

Free parking is available in the school parking lot on the east side of the building.

Here is a list of the school-required and CDC-recommended vaccines that will be available on-site at the fair:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Hib
  • HPV
  • Meningococcal
  • MMR
  • Pneumococcal
  • Polio
  • TdaP
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

Parents or legal guardians must be present with their children or reachable by phone during vaccinations. All children under the age of 18 who are uninsured or have BadgerCare/Medicaid are eligible to receive vaccinations at the fair.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.

He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.

With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.

He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.

In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.

He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
