The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2010. Find readers' results in 50 categories, including an editors' pick, in this series of articles that run daily in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.
People have been making asses of themselves in bars for a long time. But only in the last several years have they had the opportunity to embarrass themselves with a microphone, and sometimes on a stage. That way, everyone in the bar gets to "enjoy" it, too.
Occasionally, the next "American Idol" will reveal him or herself via the karaoke night -- but usually not. That said, karaoke is pretty fun. Whoever decided that loud singing and booze go together like rum and Coke should've patented the idea. It's pure gold for any bar that offers it.
In this "best of" category, OnMilwaukee.com readers picked the Up & Under Pub, 1216 E. Brady St., as the winner, and for good reason.
With free admission, the Up & Under Pub starts its karaoke night at about 9:30 on Wednesday and the fun runs until closing time. They offer $3 "oil cans" of Foster's (sure to lubricate the vocal chords of potential crooners) and cheap Cherry Bombs (sure to obliterate their inhibitions).
Karaoke at the Up & Under Pub is among the bar's busier nights. Singers can use the stage, and several regulars, including UWM music students, make it a weekly event. And of course, there's that old guy singing Sinatra every Wednesday, too.
