The already-delayed home opener for the Milwaukee Brewers is even more delayed, as Friday afternoon's game against the St. Louis Cardinals has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test.
As first reported by the MLB Network's Jon Heyman, the MLB called the game off due to multiple Cardinals team members testing positive for COVID-19. St. Louis most recently played the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis earlier this week; there are no reports yet if the Twins (or the Cleveland Indians, the Twins' opponent on Thursday) have been impacted as well.
"We are supportive of Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone today’s game and look forward to playing our home opener as soon as conditions safely allow. The health and safety of our players and employees are, and will continue to be, our top priorities." said Brewers president of baseball operations and general manager David Stearns, in a statement.
Today's news brings the total to six teams – the Brewers, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Nationals, Phillies and Marlins, not including the Yankees and Orioles, who still played but were impacted by postponements – who've been held out of action due to positive COVID-19 tests, as well as 15 games postponed due to the virus. The season is barely a week old.
As of right now, the Brewers are still scheduled for the Cardinals on Saturday night at Miller Park at 6:10 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Sunday to make up for Friday's postponement.
Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee for more updates. In the meantime, the Bucks will begin their restarted season tonight at 5:30 p.m. against the Boston Celtics in the NBA bubble, where there has yet to be a COVID-19 case. You get the impression bubbles work.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
