Shawna Nicols, also known as DJ Shawna, is no stranger to reinventing herself.

She’s done so more than a few times. A Wisconsin Badgers basketball player turned professional DJ and beyond, her story is all about the power of positivity, resilience and being yourself.

In every sense of the word, she’s a true GoGedder.

From the moment she walked into the GGMM studio, her upbeat energy was infectious; you could tell she was ready to share her story, and we were eager to listen. She sat down with Richie to talk about her start in the DJing world, persevering through loss and coming out to her loved ones.

Though she’s been through some tough times, you’d never know it. Her outlook is inspiring, and she’s not afraid to show her true colors. A strong advocate for both Milwaukee’s LGBTQ community and homeless population, her boundless ambition has fueled real, positive change in our city.

DJ Shawna’s new book, "The Adventures of Bob in Downtown Milwaukee," chronicles her dog’s adventures through the city, and the proceeds benefit Key to Change, a local initiative to help our homeless population. She’s also founded Dare To Be, a clothing line and lifestyle brand that encourages and empowers individuals to be their best selves.
